The popularity of Valve's Counter-Strike series continues to soar even as news of the upcoming Counter-Strike 2 spreads like wildfireCounter-Strike: Global Offensive, the current iteration of the game, has set a new record for concurrent players over a decade after its release. The game's free-to-play model, combined with its accessibility and the rise of streaming platforms like Twitch, has made it a hit among gamers of all skill levels.

In fact, CS: GO has just smashed its previous record of concurrent players on Steam, with an impressive 1,507,212 players logging on at the same time. This puts it in the number two position of all-time concurrent players, behind onlyPUBG's 3,236,000 record. Lost Ark, the free-to-play MMORPG that previously held the number two position, had a peak of 1,324,761 players during its February 2022 release. However, CS: GO's current player count of nearly half a million players is still far ahead of Lost Ark's peak of just under 100,000 players and PUBG's peak of just over 450,000 players.

With Counter-Strike 2 on the horizon, fans of the series can look forward to even more improvements and upgrades. The new

game will feature massively enhanced visuals and lighting, making it a feast for the eyes. However, the raised system requirements could be a concern for some players. Fortunately, longtime players will be able to retain all their unlocked cosmetics and progress, so they won't have to start from scratch.

One of the most exciting upgrades is the addition of volumetric smoke clouds from smoke grenades, making them an even more effective tactical tool. Grenades and gunfire can now help dissipate the smoke, giving players a chance to counter it. The game's maps will also be upgraded, and the server tick rates will be improved, making the game more responsive than ever before.

While some lucky players are already experiencing these new features during the Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test, the rest of us will have to wait until summer for the full release. In the meantime, CS: GO fans can continue to enjoy the game's popularity and look forward to even more exciting improvements in the future.
